Substitute Teaching Requirements

Application Process Substitute Teaching Requirements K-12 School Directory

Substitute teaching can be a useful way to learn about schools in the county while allowing the principals to get to know you. In this way, substituting can lead to full-time teaching positions once all full-time teaching requirements have been met.

Davidson County

For Davidson County, a potential substitute teacher must complete a TB skin test, be finger printed, and attend an orientation/screening.  Also, an application, references, and a college transcript (60 college hours) must be on file with the Human Resources Department at the Board of Education. More information on substitute teaching is available on the Metropolitan Nashville Public Schools’ website.

Rutherford County

Rutherford County hires substitute teachers through a private company called Holland Employment Agency. The basic requirements include holding a high school diploma or GED and being at least 21 years of age. Drug screening, background check and fingerprinting are also required. Holland Employment is located at 1630 South Church Street (Suite 109) in Murfreesboro. They can also be contacted at (615) 278-2060.

Wilson County

Wilson County requires a high school diploma or GED equivalent to substitute teach.  Also, potential substitutes are required to attend a half-day seminar. Dates and times for these seminars are sent out after an application, references, and education background (high school, college, et cetera) paperwork are submitted to the Human Resources Department. Also, you must submit a current physical and TB test. Drug screening, fingerprinting and background checks are also required. Substitute teachers that meet all requirements for full-time teaching (outlined in the “Teaching Requirements” tab) are considered for longer substitute positions (ex. when a full-time teacher goes on goes on maternity leave) and eventually full-time positions in the County.

Trousdale County

To be a substitute teacher in Trousdale County requires a high school diploma or GED equivalent. An application with references, background check, and fingerprinting are also required
